Happy Canada Day!

The Beginning

A Canada Day Run with the Calgary Hash House Harriers has been a thing for some years. This year, Hardly and Twisty stepped up to host an afternoon run on the day, which happens to follow on Wednesday. There was a plan to make this event extra special with multiple 2 km loops with refreshment stops in between. BBQ to follow!

The plan was set and the trail concept was nailed down. Apparently, the weather was a problem and some rain appeared to eliminate the marks that had been set.

Plan B – live hare on a reduced concept. Two trails to enjoy.

The pack assembled at the Hardly and Twisty Haus, ready to celebrate Canada Day. A good turn out of 24 hashers showed up. Apparently the weather turned shitty and it became a “wait in the garage and drink beer” until things sorted themselves out.

The pre run assembly in the garage was where hashers waited patiently for things to change.

The rain stopped Sort of a circle was assembled as the pack got ready for their first trail.

Good weather for hashing

The pack ventured out to form some sort of a circle in the back alley. Careful not to get your feet wet.

Camshaft runs the circle

The hares were called into the circle to describe what marks to follow. Originally, the multiple trail scheme had marks with M, G, W and E for Moose, Goose, Wolf and Eagle. Apparently a 20 minute thunderstorm obliterated all marks, so the new plan was a guided runners trail and a separate guided walkers trail.

With the marks described, the pack was released to be escorted to the trail.

The Trail

Out through the back alley, the pack was off to find their way.

Magic – now in balance

Back to the Hardly and Twisty Haus to get the back yard thing rocking.

Eventually, it was time for the down down’s to begin. Refreshments were ready!

Dastardly has this under control

The Down Down’s

Mr. PeeeeeNut was the Religious Advisor. A choir was selected of Mmmmm Lady Fingers, and Bacchanal.

The ceremony started with singing the Oh Canada song, the Hash version printed on this shirt.

Mr. PeeeeNut engaged the group with his program. First off, the hares were rewarded for setting a fine trail and hosting the Canada Day event.

Then we have Snow Blower, achieving 300 runs! Get a life?

With the down down’s complete, the pack was declared “on the piss” and continued on with the celebration of Canada Day.

Trail 1 and Trail 2 were both enjoyed. Walkers and Runners. Great trail and good recovery from that rain thing that happened at the start.

Pyro Saves the Day!

The Beginning

Canada Day is meant to be celebrated! We are pleased that Pyro stepped up to set trail on this day. With Canada Day falling on a Tuesday this year, that meant it was following the epic Monday night trail set by Daisy Duke.

The start location was set at in Tuscany NW at the Twelve Mile Coulee Natural Area parking lot, also known near a fancy condo complex known as Villa D’Este known by Google.

It was a hot day with an afternoon start. Being ready for the heat is a challenge for cold weather folks. The pack arrived and prepared for the the trail to begin.

Insane Bolt called the circle to order and went through the formalities for this small but enthusiastic group.

The marks were described by Pyro and the pack was released.

The Trail

The Tuscany area has spectacular views of Canada Olympic Park and the Rockies to the west. The ravine can be steep and deep in some places creating some adventure on the pathways.

Pyro surprised us with some urban exploring. Why not have the pack get lost in these twisty neighbourhoods! Please obey all traffic signals.

Eventually the pack made it safely back to the starting point. Cooling refreshments made the effort worthwhile.

Down Down’s

The chairs appeared and the pack prepared for outdoor down down’s delivered by Hardly, the Religious Advisor for the run. Sun protection was a good idea for those that did not want to be consumed by the solar radiation.

The down down’s went very well and met the needs of the smaller group. Hardly declared the group “on the piss” and it was time to relish in the Canada Day vibe,

Trail Summary

A fine trail in the 5 km range. Great terrain with sufficient up and down to make the beer at the end taste even better.

Good thing you were not here facing the Canada Day beach crowds at Grand Beach Manitoba.

Canada Day with a view!

The Beginning

The Canada Day Run is a Calgary hash tradition. Coincidentally, Canada Day falls on a Monday, a hashing day! Hardly and Twisty volunteered to look after the run and wind up with yummy food back at their place after the run. This was an afternoon run. In Calgary, that means that you can see the thunder storms closing in on you from a great distance. With a significant hail event the day before, we were paying attention to the colour of the sky.

The run start was at the Berkshire Gate parking lot for Nose Hill Park in the North West. This was an afternoon run, so we gathered together for a 2:00 pm start. The weather was great at the start of the run. The rain clouds were off in the distance, so not a problem yet!

On In got the circle together and we prepared for the Nose Hill run.

On In ran the circle. We have a milestone with Liquor Lots achieving 200 runs. Introduced our visitor from Wisconsin, USA, and got the hares in the circle to introduce the marks for today’s run.

Four flags indicated a “beer hunter” opportunity. Some beer had been placed in the forest for hashers to find! We were reminded that there is a lot of uphill in Nose Hill. Mountain climbing fans would not be disappointed.

With instructions complete, the hash was off.

The Trail

Nose Hill Park, to no one’s surprise, has hills. It also has wilderness areas. There was an abundance of grass, flowers, trails and views to be enjoyed.

Regroup

After a thorough investigation of the available trails, the marks eventually lead us back to the start. In the parking lot, the regroup vehicle was complete with suitable refreshments and the dark clouds had left to rain somewhere else.

The hash completed the parking lot activities successfully, then on the food and down downs nearby.

Down Down’s and Festivities

No better way to celebrate Canada day then with a BBQ and beer. We filled up the back yard with happy hashers and enjoyed the chips and goodies prior to the down down’s.

Hump the Shark nominated himself for RA duties, and assigned Roaring Nancy and Rashy Bush as the choir!

Hump the Shark went through a comprehensive list of crimes, rewards, and offences.

And now, what we have all been waiting for, time to celebrate 200 runs for Liquor Lots. She has been in training for some time now, and was prepared to show us what she can do!

Not the fastest half yard consumption record, but a solid effort. A fine display of beer drinking competency.

With all the crimes and stories completed, it was declared to be “on the piss”, and let the BBQ begin!

Trail Summary

A challenging trail run with sensational views and the bonus “beer hunter” experience. Something in the 4+ ish range, with the elevation changes to keep it real.
