Run with the Swarm

The Beginning

Krusty volunteered to set a trail in Fish Creek, Voltier’s Flats with help from Slow Clap. It has been a great mosquito season, coupled with the rain and mud to make this venue quite special

The starting point was Voltier’s Flats picnic area. Adjacent to Fish Creek, the chance of getting your feed wet were 100%. We were warned to bring dry clothes and bug spray.

Voltier’s Flats

The group arrived in the parking lot and started to get organized. Plenty of bug spray was a good choice, until it gets washed off at the first water crossing.

Circle Up

The hashers present tried to form something that looked like a circle,

Camshaft ran the circle with the mosquitos circling as well. He went through the announcements and introductions then invited the hares into the circle to describe the marks.

There was mention of flagging as well. The pack was released to find the true trail.

Avoid falling in

Through the forest, finding trail and false trail, eventually to the beer near sign indicating we were near the end of the trail. The mosquitos will have to find some new blood donors to feed them.

We think it is time for a refreshment!

A quiet portion of the parking lot as chosen to put our chairs in a circle to prepare for the down down’s.

The group settled in and waited for the down down’s to begin.

Down Down’s

The Religious Advisor (RA) for the evening was Hump the Shark. He prepared his program of stories, lies and accusations. Beverages were prepared and the down down’s were ready to deliver.

The RA selected a choir of Twisty and Daisy Duke. They sang themselves a song to demonstrate how happy they were to be selected.

First off were the hares followed by a series of crimes and acknowledgements.

The success of the recent Stampede Campout was acknowledged. A fine weekend of camping and running were enjoyed by a good number of the hash. Mmmm Lady Fingers and Camshaft did the heavy listing, with support by Stool Stuffer and Rashy Bush. Thanks to the organizers!

With the down down’s complete, we were declared “on the piss”. The group got packed up and headed over to Austen’s Pub for a debrief.

Trail Summary

Not the longest trail we have ran, but certainly the most mosquito bites per runner. The creek crossings were refreshing as was the oozing mud on the banks. Never a dull moment but I think the mosquitos were victorious.

Views of the Mosquito Swarms

The Beginning

Hump the Shark has been prolific at setting runs recently. I think he takes great pleasure setting runs to make the pack suffer for not setting trail. Hump went over the top on this run by setting a long trail, a great trail, and a mosquito rich experience.

We were warned to be ready for bugs, but we did not think we would need a full bug proof suit.

The group assembled at the Fish Creek Boat Launch parking lot at the end of Bow Bottom trail SE. A good turnout including visitors and new boots.

A warm evening, the circle started to form in a fog of bug spray.

The group was in chattering mode until Insane Bolt called the circle to order.

Insane Bolt ran the circle going through announcements and introductions.

The hare was called into the circle to describe the marks for the trail.

Flagging was described and the pack was released to find the trail.

The Trail

The pack dispersed to find the trail. With many trail options, it took some time to discover the true trail. Eventually, marks were found and the pack followed on.

Daisy Duke used his enterprising skills to find beer supply on trail. I am sure the golfers have this happen all the time.

Eventually, the trail lead back to the parking lot where the regroup vehicle was waiting with cooled refreshments and bug spray for the pack.

The Down Down’s

The group found their chairs and prepared for outdoor down down’s. On In volunteered to be the Religious Advisor (RA). He put together his story from his snitches on trail and prepared for the ceremony.

On In called the group to order and we were ready to begin.

On In needed a choir, and Skewbic Hair and Migrating Dick were selected.

Apparently, Hump the Shark was rewarded with the Hat Shit for the despair he had inflicted on the pack with the mosquito swarms.

With the down down’s complete On In declared the group to be “on the piss”.

The group then retired to the Lighthouse Pub for a post run conference.

Trail Summary

A fine trail in new territory was delivered by Hump the Shark. Good bug spray is important. Distance was in the 8 km range.

Mosquito Breeding Swamp

The Beginning

Hardly and Twisty love setting trail for the hash. They are very skilled at creating a unique hashing experience with each trail he sets. Starting from the Nose Hill Park view point, off 14 Street NW, the wilds of Nose Hill are calling out for the hashers to enjoy.

Run Start Location – Pecker Point

The group gathered in the parking lot and got organized. Apparently, the amount of rain of late has vastly improved the mosquito population. They are abundant, angry and looking for blood.

The circle was conducted and the hare described the marks for the trail. No photographic evidence provided, but trust me it all happened.

The pack was released and headed out to follow the buzz of the bugs.

The Trail

Off through the trails to the top of Nose Hill to take in the great views. Here is some evidence that there was some hashing done.

Hump the Shark looking for hashers

The high point of the trail was the regroup, of course. Hump the Shark found the hidden beer in the swamp, much to the delight of the mosquitos.

The beer at the regroup was very good, and then it was time to scurry away to the shelter of Moose’s Beanery and Bar close by for inside down down’s.

Down Down location

Down Down’s

Back to the protection of the Pub, it looks like Hump the Shark was the Religious Advisor for the down downs. It is not clear if there was a choir, or just songs by the group. Here are some random shots

Some of the notes received described the role that the mosquito’s played in adding to the enjoyment of the run.

Trail Summary

Something close to 5 km, once the GPS was turned off on the way to the pub. Epic trail that I was not able to enjoy.
