A Bit of Neighbourhood History Spotted

The Beginning

Daisy Duke volunteered to set trail for a great run. His knowledge of the Haysboro/Southwood neighbourhoods would come in handy in devising a challenging yet entertaining trail. The weather was good in early April with snow and warm temperatures at the same time!

Daisy Duke has influence with the Stoneyslope Brewing Company. As such, he was able to get them to open up on a day that they are usually closed. A private venue for the group is a good thing!

Not quite patio weather

The group arrived and settled down prior to the run. Apparently, there was a power failure in this neighbourhood. The good news is that they could still sell us beer and take credit cards using a cell phone as a hot spot! Happy days for all!

People kept arriving and the small space continued to fill up with hashers.

Camshaft and Insane Bolt declared it was time to head outside and circle up in the parking lot.

Camshaft works on getting the circle sorted out

Insane Bolt went through the announcements and introduction. We had a couple of returning archives joining us, Lying Sack of Shit and Krusty.

Finally, the hare was called into the circle to describe the marks he had set for the trail.

With the marks described, the pack was released to find the trail.

The Trail

From the parking lot, we found marks that sent us across Elbow Drive SW to the community of Haysboro. Along the streets and through the alleys enjoying the sloppy wet sunny conditions.

Some historic sights were park of the trail. An old ranch house and a very rare tree were included for our historical appreciation.

Some other features of the trail were the ski truck. Quite a find in this neighbourhood!

The long wet alley lead to the regroup vehicle. A sight to see and the source of great fulfilment.

Regroup found

From the regroup, the pack headed back to the pub to prepare for the down down’s.

Interesting beer and food choices were available. Patience with the single server was the way to go!

The Down Downs

Skewbic Hair was the Religious Advisor (RA) for the evening. He assembled his program and patiently waited for the beverages to appear.

Skewbic Hair selected a choir of Rashy Bush and Hump the Shark. They enjoyed a down down as they sang themselves a suitable song.

Trail Summary

This trail was in the 6 to 8 km range, depending on your level of embracement of the check backs and back checks. A great trail through interesting neighbourhoods.

Hash Extra

Many pictures were taken. Here are some that may be of interest to the group.

A view of the city!

The Beginning

What a privilege it is to set the last trail of the year! What a great way to celebrate the opening of a new craft brewery! The Good Cheer Brewing enabled us to sample some new beer for the tail end of the old year!

The Good Cheer Brewing occupies the space formerly used by the Evil Corporation Brewing Company, which was known to the hashers. The new owners have reinvented the space with a 1600’s theme “order of good cheer” . Think Samuel de Champlain and his pals in Quebec and you are on the right track.

We look forward to their south facing patio as the weather gets warmer.

Good Cheer Brewing – Patio promise!

Inside, those that were there early were treated to a brewery tour by the owner Nathan. The balance of the pack wandered in an looked over the goodies they had on offer to be enjoyed after the run.

Camshaft called the group outside to form a circle. Bright parking lot lights created some photographic challenges.

The weather was good as a chinook had blow in. Above freezing temperatures made for slippy and sloppy underfoot.

Missing a couple of pictures, including Tighty Whitey and Mmmmm Lady Fingers and Slippy Thong.

Camshaft went through the announcements and introductions.

Camshaft is the centre of attention as he runs the circle

The hares were called into the circle to describe the marks for the run.

With the trail described, the park was released to find the true trail.

The Trail

Off out of the parking lot in all directions. False trails galore were discovered and eventually the true trail marks were found.

Through the alleys, streets and sidewalks we continued on trying to find the illusive marks. The hare was helpful in keeping us going in the right direction.

Those that chose the eagle trail were off to the cemetery and Reader Rock Garden to catch some city views.

The Down Down’s

Mr. PeeeeNut volunteered to be the Religious Advisor (RA) for the evening. He diligently prepared his program and the beers were organized.

Mr. PeeeeeNut started off with the hares and proceeded to reword and punish those selected.

The down down’s now complete, the pack was declared “on the piss”. The group settled down to enjoy the balance of the evening.

Trail Summary

Given the excellent marks to be found, and the complication of an eagle/turkey split, the run distance was variable depending of your experience. Some say it was close to 7 km in distance, but your actual distance may vary. A fine trail through the wilds of Ramsay SE was enjoyed by the pack.

Others may have run different distances….

Trail Treasures in Haysboro SW

The Beginning

Summer is a great time to be outside in Calgary. Unfortunately, a lot of the group have travel plans so it is sometime difficult to attract both hares and runners. Daisy Duke apparently realized it was his turn to set trail, and was able to use his influence to get Stoneyslope Brewing Company to open on a Monday evening when they are usually closed.

The Monday before Canada Day is kind of weird. Seems like a lot of people take the day off to make an extra long weekend. Monday at 7:00 pm is Hash Time regardless, so the plan was to set and run the trail. A warm up to the Canada Day run that Pyro will set on the next day!

It appears that we still had our African visitors around for another hash with us. Thus, a reasonable turn out given the circumstances.

Your illustrious scribe, Skewbic Hair, was enjoying the beach life in Manitoba, thus made a plea to others to provide pictures and notes from the run. This is a remote reporting of the run I was not on.

Dastardly provided pre run Jello shots to put the group in the mood for the run.

It would appear that we had a circle in the parking lot of Stoneyslope Brewing with Insane Bolt running the circle.

Blue Balls and Karate Klit

With the announcements and introductions complete, it was time for Insane Bolt to introduce the hare to the circle.

Daisy appeared and used some props as marking posts to describe the marks for the evening. I am sure that you all remember the marks and the description of the trail provided.

With the trail marks described, the pack was released to find the marks.

The Trail

From Stoneyslope Brewing Company parking lot, the trail explored the reaches of Haysboro SW. A fine collection of roads, pathways and alley’s were navigated to create a joyful experience for the hash.

Unending trail went on for a great distance. You could see the expression of desperation in the faces of the forlorn hashers.

After an extreme effort in the summer heat, the regroup was located and the group went into drinking and socializing mode to try and forget the epic trail they had just completed.

Eventually, it was time to walk across the parking lot to Stoneyslope Brewing to prepare for the down down’s.

The Down Down’s

We set up on the picnic tables in the parking lot and got ready for the down down’s. Shakesbeer volunteered to be the Religious Advisor for the evening, so he got ready with the program.

In grand style, the down down’s started and there was much rejoicing. Many offences and crimes were committed on trail and all were duly celebrated.

I looks like Dastardly and Twisty were nominated as choir. They sang themselves a song and prepared for many more.

The down down’s went swimmingly, and it is likely that a down down was given to the RA for a job well done.

The pack was declared “on the piss”.

Trail Summary

I predict that the real trail was 7-8 km in length. Here it is courtesy of Daisy Duke.

A few additional items for you to take in from the trail.

Run 2336 – Post Partial Solar Eclipse Recovery Run, Whoops a Lazy Daisy

Hares:  Daisy Duke and Lazy Cummer
Location:  Crescent Heights High School NW

11 Ave & 2 Street NW (NW corner)

On-In: Paradise Brewing Company, 1319 Edmonton Trail #100, Calgary, AB T2E 2K5

https://maps.app.goo.gl/25aFETqTZrM6Ht8C6

RA: Hump the Shark
Attendance: 32

The Beginning

Thankfully, Daisy Duke and Lazy Cummer did not a major astronomical event getting in the way of setting trail. A partial solar eclipse is no big deal, however, they chose to wait util after the event was over to set their trail “on the day”. No point in setting trail if the world has come to an end.

Daisy and Lazy Cummer had selected a difficult to find parking lot in Crescent Heights NW as the starting point of the trail. Artfully timed to catch the rush hour and general congestion of a near downtown run location. Never the less, a trail was set and we are all thankful for that.

Arriving suitably late, the scribe did not have much of a story from the pre run activities in the parking lot. Apparently, the hares set the run at 5:00 pm. Scouted out the Two Pillars Brewing Company to conclude that it was too micro for the On-In. Good catch!

Wayne Gretzky cream and other pre run beverage were available, likely celebrating the fact the world was still functional post partial solar eclipse.

A good turn out of over 30 enthusiastic hashers, complete with visitors and new boots!

On-In got the circle started. Announcements and introductions, then the hares were call in to explain the great trail they had in store for the group.

The pack was released, and the confusion was engaged. From the top of Crescent Heights, you know that you will likely be going down, down, down to the Bow River with some great views.

The Trail

The false trails that were set from the start enabled the pack to get quite disoriented. Perhaps some post eclipse hangover was affecting judgement. Eventually, the marks were discovered and the pack found an early playground thankfully.

The trail did deliver to the height of Crescent Heights, with a great view of the city. There was no escaping the huge descent awaiting the pack.

A path with a view

The pathway was alive with people and dogs, creating some obstacles for the runners.

A major transgression of marking etiquette was committed by one of the canine runners. Surely, Poppy was not happy with the trail at this point.

Thankfully, the hash continued and a the pack was entertained with a tour of Princess Island, Centre Street Bridge and the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood.

In the interest of community service, Skewbic Hair cleaned up the detritus on the trail as not to upset the hasher with the poor housekeeping.

Eventually, the runners made it back to the regroup after 6+ km of grueling trail running.

Strap On Cramp On with avalanche airbag ready to deploy

Regroup

Given the crime problems in the neighbourhood, the hash ensure we had suitable security around our prized beverage collection. Camshaft was ready to leap into action if required. He has been practicing his defensive Japanese crutch moves should trouble arise.

The group assembled and enjoyed a suitable refreshment, thinking how the nice warm weather had been replaced a cold and windy conditions. Not ideal for parking lot down-downs.

Down-Downs

The adjacent Crescent Heights community centre had a wind reduced patio deemed suitable for down-downs. Insane Bolt and Liquor Lots prepared for the ceremonies. Hump the Shark seems to have no problem volunteering to be Religious Advisor. He may have found a permanent role with the group!

Hump selected Hot Cheeks and Strap-on Cramp-on as the choir. They seem pleased with the responsibility of selecting the songs for the group. The crimes were many. The new people and visitors were recognized. The usual suspects were recognized and a Hash Shit was handed off.

We made it through the down-downs and were declared “on the piss”. We decided to on-in at Paradise Beverage Company (formerly Elite Brewing). A small but cheerful group continued to celebrate the great trail and the end of the partial solar eclipse.
