A shoe washing opportunity in Fish Creek!

The Beginning

With Mother’s Day celebrations in hand, who would be better to set trail than two enthusiastic harrierettes, who also are mothers. The plan was to set the mother of all trails. Not to be missed and not to be taken lightly.

Princess Monkey Spanker (PMS) and Strap On Crampon set the trail from Rip’s Pub & Eatery in Millrise SW. Close proximity of Fish Creek Provincial Park and all manners of elevation changes, mud, dirt ,trees animals an, of course, Fish Creek!

Rip’s Pub claim to be very supportive of the Saskatchewan Rough Riders football team. I hope they do not check for Saskatchewan credentials at the door. Cheap beer and food deals are why we run, and they had both!

A fine venue

The weather was threatening, with rain in the forecast. Nothing to scare away the 21 hashers that showed up for the trail.

The group assembled outside in the parking lot anticipating the “mother” of all runs. Insane Bolt ran the circle as the group prepared for the run.

Looks like we had a archive and offspring of Menage-a-Trois, Ginger Stripe, who travelled from Ireland to run the trail.

With the announcements and introductions complete, it was time to have the hares introduce the trail and the marks they have used to set the trail.

With the trail described, the pack was released to find the true trail.

The Trail

The trail headed West toward Shawnee Slopes neighbourhood. Recollections of the people that bought houses here on the golf course, only to have the golf course redeveloped into more properties! Not all were happy with this.

More trail awaits for those that can find the marks. Eventually, the urban trail dropped into Fish Creek where fun was to be had by one and all.

Fish Creek over there

The pathway lead to the C-Train bridge over Fish Creek. What a great spot for a creek crossing?

C-Trail bridge

Of course, no good creek crossing goes unrewarded. Yes, you need to get back to the other side!

The trail lead toward St. Mary’s University which offered some uphill and viewpoints.

A view of the regroup gave the pack hope that his would all be over soon!

Finally, a sighting of the regroup location

The pack stumbled in to enjoy the beverages available at the regroup.

Eventually, all the hashers arrived and started complaining about being cold. Back to the bar to warm up and have the down down’s.

As the pack got settled in, food and drink was ordered at the group seemed happy!

Down Down’s

Hump the Shark was the Religious Advisor for the evening. He organized his program and prepared for the closing ceremonies.

Hump the Shark appointed Stoolie and Skewbic Hair as choir. They sang themselves a song, and handed off the photographer duties to Ginger Stripe.

Hump the Shark went through his list of down down’s. The hares, hash shit, various crimes and other made up actions.

Once we had run out of material, we were declared “on the piss” by Hump the Shark.

Scribed by Skewbic Hair.

Trail Summary

A fine trail of 6 – 7 km’s. Fish Creek does not disappoint. Excellent work by PMS and Strap On crampon. One of the best trails I have never run.

Hash Extra

Unfortunately, your scribe was conflicted with a golfing appointment at the Lorrette course at Kananaskis. Even though the weather forecast called for snow, rain and cold, a fine round as the course was empty and there was no rain or snow. Something looking like sun appeared!

Those wimps scared away by a mere weather forecast!

Run 2394 – Pyro Lights It Up

Spring is in the Air!

The Beginning

Pyro volunteered to set trail in Ranchlands NW. We have ran from the Stonewall Pub in the past, and have experienced the trails and forests of this neighbourhood. Pyro has lots of experience but admitted that he found new terrain in the scouting that he was pleased to include in the run.

The pack assembled in the pub until it was time to circle up outside.

Stonewall Pub in Ranchlands NW

There was a parking lot at the rear of the strip mall, well suited for a circle to form. Insane bolt ran the circle.

Circle up

The formalities of announcements and introductions proceeded. No unusual business except for the announcement that our next Mismanagement meeting will happen on Tuesday at the Elephant and Castle Pub.

The group figured out how to make a circle and prepared for the adventure that would unfold courtesy of Pyro.

Insane Bolt summoned the hare into the centre of the circle who proceeded to describe the marks.

Ready for the hare!

The pack was released and dispersed to find the trail.

The Trail

Out of the parking lot, marks were found and the pack was afoot. Large H’s on the sidewalk were found and followed. The sound of “On On” resonated through the neighbourhood.

Surprisingly uphill

Nature was present with spring flowers and other evidence of spring being present.

Spring Flowers

Eventually, we found the marks that led us to the regroup beer.

Regroup location

It was decided that the down down’s would be outside. Weather was good and we could splash out more down down beer.

The Down Down’s

Camshaft was the Religious Advisor for the evening. He scratched down some digital notes on his phone and collected stories from the group. Eventually, it was show time and the ceremonies started!

Show Blower, PMS, and Booty Camp – French Connection

There were some antics involving Skewbic Hair, for some crime of insignificant proportion.

Apparently, there was some evidence of photo’s of photo’s.

With all done, we honoured the RA with a down down and were declared “on the piss”.

The group retired to the pub for beer and food. Not a lot of pictures, just this evidence of yam fries.

Size is important with yam fries

Trail Summary

A fine trail close to 5 km’s. Great views and lots of up and down made the run an enjoyable experience. Thanks to Pyro for a fine trail.

Run 2392 – Y5K Run from Inglewood SE

Burns Block in Inglewood – Where Beer and Pinball Live

The Beginning

Tighty Whitey volunteered to hare this run. With the longer daylight hours, we start in the light and end in the twilight. Burns Block Social Club in Inglewood SE was the start point for the run. The location is the legacy Revival Brewery and Arcade which features plenty of pinball games.

The hashers assembled inside only to be instructed to circle up in the rear parking lot. A rather hap hazard collection this week, struggled to get the circle shape right.

A good turn out for a warm day with daylight for the run!

PMS, returning from some exotic travel destination, was in charge of the circle. Announcements and introductions were conducted and the hare was called into the circle. Perhaps AP had some role in setting the trail as well…..

We have made these marks for you
Follow these marks and all will be revealed.

After the marks were described, with an emphasis on the viewpoint, the pack was released into the setting sun.

The Trail

Off through the streets of Inglewood, along the Elbow River toward the Saddledome. Good views along the pathways were enjoyed until the stairs were discovered.

Apparently this signage is significant. Not sure if it is the family name recognition that Bacchanal identifies with, of the offer to stop for a 3 way….. Choices?

Who knew?

The sun set was observed and for those that found the stairs, a viewpoint was provided!

Some sunset shots were taken as proof that there was an actual viewpoint!

Down the stairs, back along the pathway to find more trail.

Apparently, there was some park action for the adventurous. Never let a play opportunity go by without taking time to play.

Hot Pants and Stool Stuffer sharing a moment

After many kilometers, the regroup was spotted and refreshments were enjoyed by all.

Three photogenic hashers and LSOS

Eventually, it was time to get back to the pub to begin the down down’s

The Down Down’s

Back to the Burns Block Social Club to get organized for the down down’s. Tight quarters makes for a cozy situation. Beer and food order in preparation for the main event.

What is the best deal here?

Hump the Shark was the Religious Advisor for the evening, and the choir was Dastardly and Roaring Nancy. The program started with an acknowledgement to the choir, the hare, and Shakesbeer.

A series of crimes and accusations were revealed, which included:

AP and Pyro for discussing politics on trail, LSOS for being an archive and arriving back to Canada injured, Karla, the new boot. Shortcutting, bike riding to the hash, and other serious events.

Eventually, the material was spent, the beer was consumed and all was good.

Hump the Shark declares the group “on the piss”.

Scribed by Skewbic Hair.

Trail Summary

If you made no mistakes, the trail was 5 km. Not what most people observed as 6 + km was typical. Great trail!

Hash Extra

The scribe was unfortunately unable to attend the run due to a skiing engagement in Jasper. I am sure I would have enjoyed the trail if I was there. My substitute fun was OK as well!

Run 2390 – Spring Forward and Grab a Beer, It is Daylight Savings Time

Daylight Savings Time Ends Darkness!

The Beginning

The clocks have shifted and we now have more daylight in the evening. That hour of lost sleep is eventually forgotten and we bask in the glow of a starting circle in the light.

OPP and Lazy Cummer volunteered to set trail. A good turn out for a run in the Marda Loop neighbourhood was anticipating an interesting run.

The group assembled inside the Marda Loop Brewing Company, and were called out to form a circle in the back parking lot.

PMS lead the circle as the group got organized.

PMS went through the announcement and introductions, then called the hares to the circle to explain the marks for the trail.

PMS working the circle

With the marks described, the pack was released to find the trail.

The Trail

A few false trails were discovered as the pack got their bearings and found the true trail marks. Through the neighbourhood of Marda Loop and the mud and moisture from the recent snow, the trail revealed itself.

The scribe was in the walkers group due to skiing over exertion. The walkers had a fine time exploring the development and construction occurring in the this part of town!

My inside sources suggest that the runners had a fun time finding the trail, and playing in any parks they could find.

The walkers were able to find the regroup in the parking lot of the brewery. Apparently, the runners had a significant amount of trail to run, and were delayed in arriving for refreshments.

Regroup at dusk

Eventually, once darkness had fallen, the balance of the group appeared to regale us with their conquest of the epically long trail. This shot is indicative of the level of darkness when the balance of the pack arrived.

The dark side of the regroup

The group gathered on the patio of the Marda Loop Brewing Company to order beer and food prior to the down down’s.

Eventually, Booty Camp was ready for the down down ceremonies.

The Down Down’s

Religious Advisor Booty Camp took control of the down downs and appointed a choir of Roaring Nancy.

Booty Camp thanked the hares for setting trail and then proceeded to come forward with a series of lies, accusations and crimes committed during the run.

With the down down’s done, the group engaged in the chatting and socializing until it was time to leave.

Scribed by Skewbic Hair.

Trail Summary

Some say this trail was 9 km when all done. Not sure how the sidewalk marks made it through the surprise snowfall.

The walkers were more straightforward with a big loop of close to 4 km.

Headlights on the Hill!

The Beginning

Thanks to Booty Camp and Snow Blower for stepping up to set the first trail in March 2025. Starting from Buffalo Bob’s Sports Bar in the SW, in the Glenbrook, Glendale neighbourhoods. The private room in the bar was reserved and we were set for the evening.

The weather shifted for the Monday run, where we had sustained above freezing temperatures, a dusting of snow and around freezing temperatures made the footing interesting.

The enthusiastic group turned out in good numbers as we prepared for the run at the bar.

Buffalo Bob’s Sports Bar, Pub, Grill….

We were called to the circle by Insane Bolt and headed outside to the cold and dark.

Insane Bolt called the group to order and went through an abbreviated version of the formalities.

The hares were called into the circle to describe the marks we had follow to enjoy the trail.

The pack was released and off we went to find the marks. Some confusion with running through the shopping area and industrial building before we ultimately found our way forward.

Through the streets, alleys and pathways the trail wound through the neighbourhoods.

Some gems were found on the pathways, with a snow person appearing, freshly made.

A bit icy and crunchy as the temperatures went down.

More trail until the next playground. Careful with the footing!

Strap On and LC test out the teeter totter. Shakesbeer supervises

Eventually we made it to the regroup, with Booty Camp protecting the deep puddle from the oblivious hashers.

Puddle lifeguard
Refreshment rewards

Off to the pub to get set up for down downs.

The Down Down’s

At Buffalo Bob’s, we had a private room at the back. Good set up for the group as we got settled and ordered beer and food.

Eating and drinking done well

The religious advisor for the evening was Skewbic Hair. Dispensing with photo duties to Liquor Lots, a choir was chosen and the ceremonies commenced.

The choir of Roaring Nancy and Karate Klit were rewarded with down down’s, sang themselves a song to begin the program.

Choir getting ready!

Down down’s for the hares, leading into other crimes and offences being rewarded.

Hash shit was awarded to Insane Bolt for forgetting to do the introductions at the opening circle. He was able to hand it off to a hasher of his choice, and selected Camshaft.

A round of the camel song showed a good understanding of anatomy.

Some confusion on body parts

Mmmm Lady Fingers was rewarded with a down down for achieving 269 runs.

With all material exhausted, we were declared to be “on the piss”, with a down down to the RA!

Spectacular View of the City

The Beginning

Shakesbeer has been out of the loop for some time. We are pleased that he has the courage to volunteer to set the trail. The location was Joyce on Fourth, an Irish type pub in the beltline. They have a room in the basement suitable for hosting the group.

Apparently, hashers arrived and gathered at the pub. Some of us were late due to the Mission bridge construction and subsequent detour.

Not too much for pictures prior to the run, but here is a picture of the pub in warm weather and daylight.

The Pub looks like this in the warm weather

A couple of photos of the walkers and the marks were provided as evidence that the circle took place.

The Trail

Being a bit behind the pack, some of us had to find the pack and join the run. Eventually, the headlights of the pack were sighted and the run was afoot.

With the melting conditions, the pathways were wet and icy. Challenging traction for those without spikes. Careful footing was the key.

Some parks were scattered along the way, and playing was encouraged!

Hump, Insane and Hot Quickie

More trail was discovered and we were treated to a viewpoint.

Some sort of group activity involving four people!

Thankfully, the regroup was near and we found the refreshments.

The regroup provided an opportunity to collect the group and score some pictures, missed from the circle.

With refreshments done, off to the pub for the Down Down’s

The Down Down’s

Off to the Joyce on Forth pub, to our room in the basement. Beer specials and food specials were available so…. a lot of eating and drinking.

Hump the Shark was religious advisor, the down down beer was procured and the ceremonies were ready to start.

Hump the Shark ready to go!

A choir was selected, Camshaft and Mmmmm Lady Fingers. As they have been vacationing in warmer countries, time for some choir action.

Down down’s for the choir and the hares. A procession of other crimes were tabled and down down’s were consumed.

This is How Cold it is!

The Beginning

Calgary has had a bit of a cold spell for the last 10 days of so. With temperatures in the -25 C range plus windchill, it makes for a chilly outdoor experience. At least the sun was out for the afternoon run, making a considerable difference.

The lead up to the run included encouragement to dress up in layers and do not be a wimp. As such, we had 17 hashers come out and enjoy the fine trail set by PMS and Liquor Lots.

We arrived at Two Pillars Brewing to start the run. Once parked, we circled up “outside”.

PMS was called into the circle to describe the marks she had chosen for the trail today.

With the instructions complete, the pack was released to find the trail.

The Trail

Off toward the river we ran. Not wanting to give up the high ground, the neighbourhoods revealed the marks to follow.

Of course there were sights to be seen and parks to play in.

Some sort of expensive urban art. Does not seem to mind the cold.
This would be a city view. Frosty!
The lion greets us!
No more Eau Claire Market!

Off through Princes Island Park over to the Peace Bridge to return to the North side of the rver.

The community provided some interesting ice sculptures. These were very popular with the the tactile folks in the group.

Waiting for the Chinook!

Eventually, we had to climb the massive hill to get to the top of Crescent Heights where we were greeted with a significant wind to freeze us to death.

Apparently there was a downhill and uphill section that some of the enthusiastic hashers took. Others preferred the flat elevation to the regroup.

Nothing like a cold refreshment on a cold day! Hot chocolate was available as well!

Off to the bar to warm up and conduct the down down’s.

Down Down’s

The Two Pillars Brewery was a bit small, but that did not stop us from finding space and running through our down down program.

Hump the Shark was Religious Advisor (RA) for the afternoon festivities. A choir was called and the down down’s commenced!

The hares were called up and acknowledged for the fine trail that had been set on this cold and frosty day.

More crimes and punishment were handed out by the RA. The Hash Shit has a new owner, and many offences were acknowledged.

There was some group activity which warranted down down’s.

On the Piss

After the down down’s, the group continued with mirth and merriment, and yummy beer from Two Pillars Brewery.

The Trail

A fine trail of 6 – 7 kms was enjoyed by the group. Pleased we had sunshine and a warm pub for afterwards.

Run 2385 – Polar Vortex Long Run

Hares:   Insane Bolt

Location: Pazzer’s Saskatchewan Pub Montgomery NW

Attendance: 11

How Cold Does This Look?

The Beginning

With no hares in the program, being a Hashmaster can have it’s challenges. As such, Insane Bolt was coerced into setting trail. His plan was to make it a long one, with words like Ultra Marathon used to describe his intentions.

Weather can be a fickle thing in Calgary. Last weeks heat wave was soon forgotten as the polar vortex settled in for some time, Running in temperatures of -25C requires some special provisions. Layers and dry clothes to change into are a must.

The temperatures filtered out some of the fair weather types, so our numbers were a bit down this week. It is not the quantity of the group, but the quality. As such we had 11 hard core hashers present to enjoy the run that Insane Bolt had produced for us!

Through the ice fog, snow and slippery roads, the group assembled at Pazzer’s Saskatchewan Pub. For those that are not familiar, this pub is a bastion of all things Saskatchewan. Like an oasis for those that long for a touch of Regina in Calgary.

Inside was busy, cramped but warm as we got ready for the run.

With all the late cummers accounted for, it was time to head out and circle up.

Sort of a circle

PMS conducted the circle and our hare, Insane Bolt, was summoned into the circle to describe what he had planned for us.

Insane pointed a direction and the cold hashers started to look for marks.

The Trail

Through the community of Montgomery, we found marks and followed them. Surprisingly, there are hills in the neighbourhood, with most of them going up!

We stopped at the viewpoint for those in our group, and a picture was taken to record the event.

You can see a lot from here!

Apparently, the other half of the running group was elsewhere, having been befuddled by the interpretations of the marks. Eventually, they were found and no one died. They did send us some pictures to prove they were on trail!

Looks like they will fall over with that slant!

Off through the wonders of Bowness and the bridge crossings along the Trans Canada highway, always a good time!

Off toward Shouldice Park and a run through the pathways by the river. It was cold. Eventually, we ended up at the regroup to enjoy beer slushy’s. We were somewhat concerned about the missing hashers, but they eventually made it to the end and all was good!

PMS survived…..

With outdoor refreshments done, it was time to dress for inside down down’s. Dump the wet clothing and ward off hypothermia.

Off to the inside where we packed the pub with a full table of happy hashers. The locals were amused with the invasion.

It was decided to splash out for suitable down down beer, the honour and recognize the intrepid group that enabled the continued operation of the group!

Beer Wench provided a full serve!

Hump the Shark declared “sitting down down’s” and we were set to go.

Choir was Scoobie and Lazy Cummer and the program was started.

Around the table we went with down down’s for everyone!

After we exhausted the stories and the crimes, the Religious Advisor declared the group to be “on the piss”. The group settled in for more socializing and refreshment prior to heading out into the cold.

Trail Summary

We run over 5 kms is the cold. There were shortcuts available for those that needed them. In addition, Insane Bolt had some extra distance for those so inclined. A great run in the cold.

Run 2384 – Rabbie Burns Memorial Run

You can see Calgary from here!

The Beginning

In the celebration of Robbie (Rabbie) Burns, the Scottish poet and lyricist , lived from 25 January 1759 – 21 July 1796. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide.

Hump the Shark volunteered to set trail for the Robbie Burns tribute run. All things Scottish was the theme. The location was in the deep south community of Legacy, which is most of the way to Okotoks. Bobby’s Place Pub is a Scottish themed eatery which had Haggis on the menu.

With succinct GPS coordinates, finding the place only took more time than you could have imagined. Those coming from the north could have been most of the way to Banff if they were heading west. Nevertheless, the venue offered a view into a new section of town and distant views of downtown from top of the river bank!

The weather was good with above freezing temperatures. Perfect for high quality ice and slippery conditions. Hashers arrived to the pub and began their preparations for the evening trail.

Bobby’s Place Pub

The pack was instructed to head outside for the circle.

PMS called the circle to order and we went through the introductions. New boots, archives and a good turn out for such a southern location.

Hump the Shark was called into the circle to describe the marks.

There was flagging described as well as mention of a walkers trail. The hash was released into the neighbourhood to find the marks.

The Trail

Off we go in all directions. Plenty of ice to navigate and much confusion. Tiny marks widely spaced. Eventually, we found the beginning of the trail and the pack as off.

Parks were present, so playing was a thing. Shiny new playground equipment offered some new play experiences.

From the top of the river bank, there were some great views of downtown, which was very far away.

More urban exploring uncovered evidence of a civilization that must have existed in Legacy prior to the redevelopment. There is some chance that this is fake.

Apparently there is some unique wildlife on the pathways . No camels or elephants were spotted and we heard no one speaking to their dogs.

More wilderness, pathways, parks and sidewalks lead us to the regroup.

After what seemed to be a long time, the regroup was discovered and all was put right.

Off to the pub to conduct the down down’s

The Down Down’s

We presented a large group to the pub and they were able to accommodate us. They had haggis on the menu which was popular with the Scottish aligned crowd.

We gathered and figured out where to sit and what to order prior to the commencement of the down down cerimonies.

On In and Snevil got to work to start the down down’s. On In looked after the Scottish piece and Snevil did the rest.

On In and Snevil preparing for the down down’s

A choir of King Shit and Tighty Whitey was selected and we were ready to go.

With the Robbie Burns theme, On In educated us on all things Scottish, and provided a tribute to the haggis. In spite of the lack of simultaneous translation, the delivery was excellent.

More crimes and punishments were handed out by Snevil.

More offences came forward. Something to do with clothing redistribution on trail.

Hard to keep track of the multiple offences, but here are the people that were honoured.

During the festivities, a beer was sacrificed and created quite a mess and a workplace hazard. A quick response from the spill response team made everything right again.

Recovering from the beer mishap, more hashers were called up to received down down’s.

With all crimes disclosed and worked with, we were declared “on the piss”, and a down down was given to the RA’s.

Hardly Downhill!

The Beginning

With much celebration, we have three hares stepping up for set trail in mid January. Ozzie Pizzle Pants (OPP), Liquor Lots (LL) and Lazy Cummer (LC) joined forces to set a fantastic trail from Two House Brewing Taproom and Pizza in the Sunalta neighbourhood, in the shadow of the C-Trail tracks.

Even better, Two House has declared $5.00 pints for the month of January. Is that not a good reason to patronize this establishment? In addition, plenty of great terrain for the trail.

Trail setting was done in the cold weather on Sunday (-20 C). Monday chinook winds warmed things up to -4 C. We gathered inside prior to the run start.

Insane Bolt announced it was time to circle up in the rear parking lot of the pub.

Insane Bolt ran the circle. We had visitors, archives and newish boots.

Insane Bolt runs the circle. Nice onesie of shame!

The hares were called into the circle and explained the marks we needed to follow for the trail.

Hares ready to show us the marks……Gravel parking lot not the greatest. Time to improvise.

The hares pointed in a westerly direction and the pack was off.

The Trail

A few misleading marks lead to false trails. After the requisite fumbling around, true trail was discovered.

Hardly scopes out the view

Finally, a park was found and the playing and sliding was engaged in earnest.

Down the hill and through the neighbourhood prior to finding the stairs that must be climbed.

Nothing ever happens here!

We eventually made it to the pathway beside the river. This was a long stretch of distance with few options. We found the regroup under the C-Train tracks close to the pub. Refreshments were appreciated!

F4 scopes out the regroup

After our refreshments, it was back to the pub to get sorted out for down down’s.

Down Down’s

Inside Two House was warm and dry. The smell of fresh pizza was present. The pack settled in as the Religious Advisor got his act together.

Plenty of space

A number of crimes and transgressions were brought to light, as well as the acknowledgement of the hares. Scoobie was called up to be a stunt double for Just10 Beaver, who had escaped prior to receiving her down down. Scoobie handed off the photo taking duties to others.

Eventually, Hump the Shark ran out of beer and material and we were “on the piss”.

Trail Summary

We were pleased that the weather warmed up for the run. Happy that the hares set trail in the -20C range, -4C seemed balmy. Total distance in excess of 5 km.
